Why These Picks?
ATL Braves v MIA Marlins: The Marlins offense is always a wild card in my opinion. Some days they turn up in spades, others I wonder if they’re even at the game they’re scheduled to play (lol). For this reason, I’ll steer clear of the overall total. Miami starter Eury Perez (6.43 ERA) has only had 2 starts this season and allowed 5 ERs across the pair, but both were against incredibly mediocre offenses (Washington Nationals & Pittsburgh Pirates). After suffering a loss at the hands of the Marlins just yesterday, my money’s on the Braves offense to show up motivated and put at least 5 on the board.
SEA Mariners v CHI Cubs: A game total set as high as 12.5 at Wrigley undoubtedly means the wind is working overtime in favour of a high-scoring affair. That said, I’m rolling with the Cubs’ team total today, as I’m not the biggest fan of Emerson Hancock (4.48 ERA). Cade Horton (3.47 ERA) has been rock solid at home, and despite the advantageous conditions, I think it’s Chicago who will be using them to put runs in the bank.
CHI White Sox v TOR Blue Jays: With the White Sox looking like they’ll be rolling another bullpen game and the Blue Jays eager to make up for yesterday’s loss, I think the Over will cash in spades here. 3 of starter Jose Berrios’ last 4 outings have seen game totals of at least 9 runs, and while he’s typically a solid arm, his last trip to the mound saw him earn 6 runs. Chicago showed us yesterday that they have no issue getting runs on the board, but on the flip side, I certainly don’t trust their bullpen to deliver 2 days in a row. Give me the Over to cash.
**UPDATE, 9:15AM PST: Aaron Civale is now listed as pitching for the White Sox.
WAS Nationals v LA Dodgers: I don’t doubt that the Dodgers can put runs on the board against even the most formidable pitching opponents. The real question is whether or not the Nationals will be able to get more than a few past starter Dustin May (4.46 ERA). 3 of May’s last 4 outings have all seen totals of at least 9 runs. On the other side, LA managed to get 6 runs past MacKenzie Gore (arguably one of Washington’s better starters) just yesterday. I don’t think the Dodgers will have any issue running up a total on Jake Irvin (4.23 ERA), friends, and the Nats offense should be able to hold their own with Dustin May on the mound. Take the Over to hit.
